Subject는 옵저버들 간에 단일 실행 경로를 공유하는 특별한 유형의 옵저버블입니다.
사람들로 가득 찬 방에서 마이크를 들고 말하는 단 한 명의 사람으로 생각할 수 있습니다. 그들의 메시지 (the subject) 는 수많은 (multicast) 사람들에게 (the observers) 동시에 전달됩니다. 바로 멀티캐스팅 의 개념입니다. 일반적인 옵저버블은 1대 1의 대화라고 생각할 수 있습니다.
